Welcome East River High School Students, Parents, & Staff!!

My name is Jason Balma and I am teaching American History and American History Honors at East River High School.  I have taught at East River for two years and I am also the assistant wrestling coach.  I am an alumnus of UCF for both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Social Studies Education.  GO Knights!  I am very excited to be a part of this new and growing high school in Orange County Public Schools and I have no doubt that ERHS will quickly establish itself as an excellent academic institution filled with student opportunity and success.  Go Falcons!

I am certain that both students and parents will quickly discover my deep passion for social studies and teaching/learning.  I believe that social studies, including US History, posses such a great capacity for student learning and discovery; both in the past and the present.  In "our" classroom, I will challenge both students and myself to evaluate history with a critical perspective that goes beyond simply historical facts and reaches a deeper understanding of our past - and thus a deeper understanding of the present and ourselves.  I will continuously ask students to look for the "big picture" concepts that influenced both historical and modern events.

I am sure that we are going to have a great year and I look forward to a great experience!
